A busy day is pretty much the worst the worst kind of day for someone who is trying to keep up a blog. But there is something even worse than a busy day...6 busy days in a row (It was 5 when I started writing this post last night)! It's pretty crazy to think that my interview with TAIT Stage Technologies was 5 days ago, but...I suppose "time flies when you are having fun." To give a very broad summary which I will expand on, I'll say: Friday I woke up early, headed to Neasden, home of TAIT Stage Technologies for an interview then proceeded to meet up with some CMU friends who were in town. Saturday was a tour around the city...which I have some opinions on...then a few hours in the tower of London (don't worry, my head is still fully attached). Sunday...If Friday was CMU day, Sunday was The Park School of Baltimore day, along with Nix from CMU, I went up to Cambridge and among the things I saw was a friend from Park who is studying there. Monday I began my first full week of class which included my 4-hour session of British Television Studies and later in the evening I had the pleasure of attending what I hope is the first of many West End shows. Writing about Tuesday wraps up the five-day lapse and concludes with a trip to the science museum, a dinner with friends and an evening out at a local college pub. But since I did not finish this post last night, you get a bonus day. Today I slept in for my 1:15 class and saw Beautiful: The Carol King Musical.
I am very excited to have accepted an internship at TAIT Stage Technologies and can't wait to start. I'll be working as a project management intern with their "Permanent Installations" department...the same department that made the London Opening ceremonies. I will be spending some time in the office and some time on site. The commute to Neasden where TAIT is based is about a 40-minute tube ride with one train change from my dorm. Being used to a 1-minute walk from my dorm to school in Pittsburgh, this daily commute will probably be a struggle at the start, but I have mapped out some coffee and sandwich shops so I am not too worried. The office I will be working in does not focus on the construction of large pieces of scenery, but is more geared towards planning and automation work. I am particularly excited about this discovery because I am hoping to significantly improve my skills and experience in those two areas. I am sure I will have a lot to report when I start there late February. I then spent the evening with some CMU friends who were in town for a conference. It was nice to see some familiar faces.
Saturday we went on what turned out to be a bus tour through the landmarks in the city. I was mildly disappointed as I thought I would be going in, or at least up close, to a few landmarks. We did end at the Tower of London which was a nice conclusion to the day. We walked around the grounds for a few hours and made sure to see the Crown Jewels and Beefeaters.
Sunday, along with Nix, I went to Cambridge. We went punting, saw the grand buildings, and met up with Chris, my friend from Park. He showed us around his college within Cambridge and was a really great tour guide. He goes to school full time at Cambridge so he showed us what we might not typically see on a normal tour or just walking around ourselves.
Monday started at 9 am with my Television Studies class. We discussed the BBC, its history and current state. Later in the evening, I met up with Jess from Fernwood Cove and we went to see Half a Sixpence. We got tickets at the TKTS booth in Leicester Square and had really great seats for an even better price.
Tuesday (I'm going to make this quicker) we went to the science museum to view the communication exhibit for my TV class. It was a very expansive museum including flight, time and modern revolution exhibits.
Wednesday started around 1:15 with my core drama class and then I went to see Beautiful: The Carol King Musical with some friends. At the end of the show I went up to the sound mixer to ask a question and she advised me to drop off my resume to their stage door in the hopes of shadowing the show for a night. I will do that soon and report back.
And, as expected, another day has gone by without me posting this post so I will write about today (Thursday) quickly. Since I only have class Monday through Thursday, Thursdays feel like Fridays. This morning I went on a tour of the National Theater with my drama class. It is an extremely high tech and advanced theater building and I am looking into shadowing there as well.
That is all for what turned into a seven-day post. Hopefully I learned my lesson about putting this writing off and will post more regular and shorter posts.
Drew
